Genre Research of Key Aspects

 Genre Research of Key Aspects

While progressing through my research, I feel confident about my decision to choose the genre/sub-genre Thriller/Suspense.  As I am continuing digging deeper in my research I find myself looking into famous movie intros of sensational Thrillers and Suspense movies.  The best movies in this genre have an opening sequence that grabs the audiences attention from the very start.  This movie clip below from The Invitation, is a great example of catching not only my eye but the vast majority of reviewers.

This film shows the great use of sound and cinematography to engage the audience and the "what if's" right off the bat to create the feeling that something is about to happen but we don't know what or when.  The Thriller and Suspense films use the sounds of nondiegetic music, not heard by characters, for suspense to help manipulate the audience to build tension and enhance fear.  Low frequency, very sudden sounds help to establish the overall mood.

Cinematography is essential to Suspense and Thriller films.  It creates anticipation through visual story telling.  For example, the slow, creeping camera movements and the low key lighting (shadows) build a discomfort with the audience which leaves us at the edge of our seats and craving more.  It also helps direct the viewer's focus to specific details while hiding potential threats or other key items to trigger darkness outside of the frame.

I will be implementing these tools in sound and cinematography as my research and planning continues.  These tools help me to better understand the dynamics of how to create a specific genre.
