Connotative meaning: The desk pushed to the corner of the empty room leaving a lot of open space shows the emptiness of his life.
Denotative meaning: Has little to nothing in his name that would be able to go in this room that he's in
Code: The code for this scene would be the change of color. From the dull grey office to the black dark transitioning to opening the door to the outdoor street scene where the harmonium was set in place.
This extract uses semiotic theory by showing the large empty room with Barry pushed to the corner of the room. This empty space signifies the emptiness in his life with the grey dim room and boring blue suit. The transition through the dark space to outside with the unsettling crash to the delivery of the harmonium is indicative of the changes about to take place in his world.
