Blog post #5 Depth of Field in Cinematography

 1.

This is a deep focus shot from A space odyssey (1968) which focus on the 2 main individuals but also shows the background which leads to important clues later on in the movie.

This is a shallow shot from Submarine which blurs out the background so the audience can deeper understand the main individuals feelings in the moment.

This is a soft focus shot from Harry Potter which shows a flashback of professor Dumbledore's memories when he was a little kid.

2.

This is a Deep focus shot which shows the 2 main individuals speaking while the cast in the back are observing which can cause the audience to think about what happens next in the film.

This is a shallow focus shot which shows the anger on the character face. The blurred background better helps the audience to really understand the emotion behind the shot.
This is a soft focus shot which shows a dreamy state that the shot is trying to tell. This gives the audience more evidence to backup the plot of the film.

3. These Photos took more time to get right then the pervious ones. For example, the deep focus shot took a few try's to get because I was trying to tell a story within the background and not just the main individual. Which is hands down the hardest part in all of these photos, getting the story within the photos. Another example was the soft focus shot. I had to get creative with that one because the camera lens wouldn't get that blurry fog look that I needed. Eventually I got something to work but that took a couple of try's as well. The least amount of trouble was the shallow focus shot. The only reason was because there's a setting where you can blur out the background for you so that definitely helped out a lot. The only struggle I had with that one was picking a right shot that showed emotion. Emotion was also key to all these stills. In order to tell the story within the characters I needed to convey a tone and emotions in each shot. Without those 3, my shots were be very boring or wouldn't make sense to the viewers. The whole point of the shots are to give a better understanding to the plot. So, overall, I believe that these photos took more time but were better then pervious blogs. Learning how to do a soft focus shot to where you can still see the object but gives that fog look was super fun.
