Postproduction as a Director (Reflection)

As I embarked on this journey in the Director role, I was surprised early on by the amount of work that was ahead of me.  As the pre-production began, I already felt like we were behind before we even arrived at the gate.  Communication is a crucial part of any team and our team struggled with this from the very start.  Attendance was also an opportunity for this team.  I have faced numerous hurdles between getting the team to kick-start this project without being told every step of the way and getting their buy-in to complete the requirements.    Although this project was set to benefit us all equally, the crew was not equally invested it would seem.

The next challenge came as we moved into production.  Our crew set a Sunday afternoon to film but as the day approached the actors were no longer available as they were coming off a workshop that previous day.  We needed to quickly reschedule as the actors were also not available on weekdays.  We went back to the drawing board and came up with a new cast and date to film.  I needed to work the schedule around not only the new cast and our crew schedules particularly as the Thanksgiving holiday fell right in the middle of this period and many people from both sides were traveling.  The new film date was directly afterschool so we proceeded to work through the tensions and weary feelings amongst the group.  We were able to successfully complete the filming both at the school and at the mall.

As we are currently now in the time crunch to finish before the deadline.  We will work together to put the finishing touches on the film and complete the post-production tasks.  Overall, this experience has taught me many life lessons particularly with working in a group.  I will definitely need to regroup and change my mindset before heading onto the next project.  I will take the lessons learned and lead with a more confident, stern approach to keep the project and everyone within it moving along to achieve the best possible outcome.
