Script Research
As I began planning my script, I am considering how can I grab the audience's attention. What would bait me into the film and then give a sudden plot twist? I would love to keep the audience on the edge of their seats, keeping them in one direction and suddenly changing the dimension and throwing them off to a completely different path. In order to achieve this mission, I need to create illusions where the audience won't see clearly while they get glimpses of Easter eggs throughout my film.
YouTube Video: Screenwriter's Research to Nail-Biting Suspense by James A Hurst
This video explains how the writer uses some secrets to captivate the audience in such amazing films as Get Out and Hardy Boys. As I move more in depth into the video, he gives me an idea of optimizing the attention of the audience. This idea is to give them just enough attention to dread what is coming next. My plan to achieve this idea is to start with some background on the two main characters so they build the dynamic that I will take in the story while the audience also runs with.
Hurst explains how I could use the Psychological Presence as a tool to:
- Lock Your Audience Inside the Scene
- The opening lines need to set a somber tone to build questions from the start for example, a screech, crying or death.
- Build Unbearable Tension Without Action or Violence
- Learning this element of this. technique is very useful because this film is a school assignment and I would not want to violate any rules as such. I could build this tension with a verbal argument or through steady glances between characters to give the audience some insight.
- Turn Quiet Moments Into Emotional Landmines
- In Thriller and Suspense films, silence could be deadly or speak volumes. In my script, I will be using silence as a trigger that something is about to happen or be revealed.
