Finding Symbolism in My Film

 Finding Symbolism in My Film

As I begin looking further ahead into writing my script I will need to keep in mind what will bring the audience back again and again.  Particularly in a Thriller/Suspense film I want to keep my audience in the dark so to speak.  I do not want to lay all of the details in a simple roadmap format.  Ideally I will keep them guessing until the very end and even then they will continue to think back about the key details that may have been in plain sight through other objects.  I will achieve this goal by using symbolism throughout my project.

YouTube Video: How Filmmakers Create Depth-Symbolism Explained by StudioBinder

As I went through this video, it provided me with a good foundation of the what symbolism means and the depth to which it is created.  It challenged me to find ways to include symbolism into my work through the use of ordinary items but of course portraying a much deeper meaning.  There are different types of symbols such as objects, characters, settings etc that when used correctly keeps viewers on the edge of their seat and often thinking in another direction.

As I create my production, I need to keep in mind my intentions while using symbolism but also know that the audience while trying to figure out may begin creating their own ideas of symbolism as well.  Interpretation from the viewer may skew the actual meaning and pull them off course unintentionally.  These concepts will be kept top of mind as I begin the journey of writing the script.
